Battery Storage Solar Systems

Battery storage solar systems are growing in popularity with a number of new battery products coming onto the market in 2015 and 2016. Many of the new products are aimed at customers with grid connection and are often known as hybrid solar systems. There is also still a strong demand for off grid battery storage solar systems from customers building new homes in fringe of grid areas through central and western Victoria, with a number of off grid battery storage solar installations happening in the Ballarat, Bendigo and Warrnambool regions. There are also more people enquiring about going off-grid in cities and towns like Geelong and Melbourne and smaller towns around the Surfcoast and Bellarine, with some people willing to defect from the grid despite the economics of doing so.

To help determine which type of battery storage system is best for you, here’s a quick overview of Off Grid vs Hybrid battery storage solar systems.

An off-grid battery storage solar system for an average house normally comes in around $30,000-$50,000. If you’re building a house and have a high grid connection cost in the tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars, there could well be a strong economic argument to install battery storage instead of paying to connect to the grid. Some smaller homes or sheds with low energy usage may come in under $20,000 and some larger homes could be anywhere up to $70,000-100,000+.

If you have grid connection or the cost of connection is low, there may be no economic driver to go completely off grid. However becoming more independent from your and not having to deal with your electricity retailers is sometimes a strong enough motivation for people to go off-grid anyway. Others are making the decision to go off grid for environmental, philosophical or altruistic reasons.

If you do have grid connection close by and are looking at going off-grid, you probably need to consider that most off-grid battery storage solar systems will require a generator. If you are living in a city or town and have neighbours close by, the noise factor needs to be considered. There will also be some work required to maintain the generator and keep fuel up to it.

If your budget won’t quite stretch to a full off-grid battery storage solar system or the idea of generator maintenance is not appealing you may be better to consider a hybrid battery storage system.

Hybrid Battery Storage Solar Systems

A hybrid battery storage solar system can allow you to have the best of both worlds. You can have battery storage as well as keeping your grid-connection and avoiding generator backup. Hybrid battery storage solar systems are generally cheaper than going fully off-grid as you can reduce the battery capacity and solar array size to suit your budget, knowing that you’ll have grid backup to pick up additional consumption on top of what the battery capacity can supply.

There has been a lot of media exposure around the Tesla Powerwall recently, however there are now a large range of different hybrid battery storage products on the market and they all have slightly different characteristics and features, so it will depend on your situation and what you’re trying to achieve as to which solution will suit you best. A few of the features or benefits to consider include:

  • Increase solar self-consumption
  • Blackout protection if the grid goes down
  • Uninterruptable Power Supply (UPS)
  • Retrofittable to existing solar systems
  • Peak power output of the battery & inverter
  • Three phase compatible
  • Off grid compatible
