Aaron Lewtas – Director, Green Energy Options

“My interest in renewable energy began after a conversation with a travelling surfer around a campfire at Cactus in the South Australian desert back in 2005. I’d been living in Edinburgh and was trying to work out what I wanted to do with my life; I’d just been for a short trip home and was on my way back when I met that guy and the first seed was planted. We talked about the surf, the environment, work and jobs of the future, there’s a lot of sun out there and I think it must have baked the idea into my brain. I came home at the end of 2006 and did a course in Electrotechnology: Renewable Energy.”

During the course, Aaron began work at Solar Shop Australia where he stayed for three years as a Renewable Energy Advisor before moving on to start up Green Energy Options in 2011. Aaron is an accredited grid connect solar designer with the Clean Energy Council and he has experience in stand alone and battery storage systems through his work with Off-Grid Energy Australia.

“Growing up in Anglesea gave me an appreciation of the natural environment. The Surf Coast is such an amazing place to live; we have probably the cleanest beaches in the world, some really unique heathlands, waterfalls down the road and some of the best surf in Australia. Geelong and Melbourne are close, the Great Ocean Road is on our doorstep and we’re surrounded by great food and wine areas like the Otways and the Bellarine, I can’t think of a better place to bring up a family. I’m living in Torquay now, but my mum and dad’s place in Anglesea looks out on the bush and I grew up looking at the smoke stack from the coal fired power station form the kitchen window. It makes you think about the environmental and health impacts of burning fossil fuels and I think it played a part in me looking into energy alternatives”

Aaron is also involved in the local community; he has been a member of a number of local sporting clubs and is currently the Vice President of the not for profit organisation the Surf Coast energy Group (SCEG), which he’s been a volunteer on the committee for since 2007 and President from 2013-2015.
